Description: In SnackReads Generations 1, we have collected two kick-butt Science Fiction stories by two woman from different generations. One is a veteran who wrote hers decades ago, one is a young up-and-comer. Both have written stories about realistic women who deal with many challenges and overcome. They are funny. exciting, smart, and at their heart deal with issues such as discrimination, lack of social safety net, workers rights, and physical handicap. We put the two together because, as Charnas says in her introduction to Caethe’s story, “…they are linked by a sort of fictional DNA that carries and reflects the sharp and the subtle mutations of culture that writers (and readers) of SF perceive around them.”

In Suzy Mckee Charnas’, “Scorched Supper on New Niger,” Space Pilot Dee Steinway has so far escaped the clutches of her empire-building brother-in-law; now he has her, her feline companion, and her uniquely valuable spaceship in his sights. Will her desperate landing at a colony of traders from Old Africa lead to an escape, to a delicious comeuppance, or a trap?

In Vivian Caethe’s, “Cargo,” a young woman who has been maimed in an industrial accident takes the only work she can find. Faced with starvation, she agrees to let smugglers use her body as a hiding place for contraband they want to transport off planet. Let’s just say there are unforseen consequences.
